Ordering your Medication

Repeat medication can be order in the following ways:

  • Online via NHS App, Patient Access, etc. (prefered method)
  • The Dispensary or your nominated Pharmacy
  • Leaving a request in our post boxes
  • In person at either Reception desks

**In conjunction with guidance from the LMC (Local Medical Committee) and in the interests of patient safety, Twyford Surgery is no longer accepting requests for repeat or acute medication over the telephone **

The prescription will be available for collection within three working days.

Patients should nominate a chosen pharmacy with there medication request. This will help the surgery to effiecinetly process your prescription request.

Any new medications or requests from the hospital will take longer as these have to be authorised.

Dispensary / Pharmacy

Twyford Surgery is a dispensing surgery, whcih means for those patients that live more than a mile from a pharmacy are eligible to become dispensing patients.

Eligible patients who wish to be dispensing will be asked to register. Once registered as a dispensing patient, your medication will always be ready to collect from the medical centre's dispensary. You will not need to collect your prescription from us first. Please ask at reception for details about how to register.

In addition your doctor will be able to dispense medication to you, should you require it, on a home visit.

Patients who are not eligible to be dispensing can choose from one of the following three options:

  1. Arrange for your prescription to be electronically sent to another pharmacy
  2. Collect their prescription from the surgery reception desk to take to another pharmacy

You can find a local pharmacy via the NHS Find a Pharmacy webpage.

Can a Pharmacy Help Me?

Alongside the Surgery, Twyford Pharmacy (and any other Phrmacy) can offer advice on a range of illnesses, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, ear infections and aches and pains.

They can also give advice about medicines. This includes how to use your medicine, worries about side effects or any other questions you have.

If they cannot help you themselves, they can refer you to a GP or other health professional.

More information on how a Pharmacy can help you can be found on the NHS Phamacy webpage.

Dispensary

We are extending this service by stocking a number of the more popular 'over-the-counter' medicines that you can buy without the need for a prescription. We hope this will be convenient for you. Any suggestions for improving our dispensing service further will be welcome.

We believe that dispensing brings enormous benefits to our patients and provides an integral part of achieving our high standards of care.

We are:

  1. Committed to providing a high quality, comprehensive, efficient dispensing service that is sensitive to patients' needs.
  2. Ensuring that all dispensing staff receive suitable training.
  3. Building in adequate checking mechanisms during dispensary procedures to ensure that medicines are dispensed accurately and safely.
  4. Ensuring that dispensary staff have easy access to a GP staff member at all times during the day.
  5. Providing high quality equipment in the dispensary which is adequate and suitable for all processes involved in dispensing.
  6. Ensuring that cleanliness and hygiene are observed throughout the dispensary during all dispensing procedures.
  7. Complying with all laws and regulations applicable to dispensing practice. Ensuring that confidentiality is maintained with respect to all patient records whether on manual or computerised systems.
  8. Respecting the need for patient privacy during all dispensing procedures. Ensuring patients are provided with appropriate information and advice concerning their medication.
  9. Adopting a practice formulary and by constantly reviewing it, to continue to provide the highest standards of care.

Please allow  a full 5 working days, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed. If you come to collect before then, we may have to waste valuable time looking for something that's not there!

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines.  Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

Most adults in England have to pay prescription charges.

Some items are always free, including contraceptives and medicines prescribed for hospital inpatients.

As of 1st April 2024, the current prescription charge is £9.90 per item.

A prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) could save you money on NHS prescription costs:

  • a 3-month PPC costs £32.05 and will save you money if you need more than 3 prescribed items in 3 months
  • a 12-month PPC costs £114.50 and will save you money if you need more than 11 prescribed items in a year
  • a hormone replacement therapy (HRT) PPC costs £19.80 and will save you money if you need more than 2 prescribed qualifying HRT items in a year

  • an abdominal or spinal support is £47.80
  • a stock acrylic wig is £78.15
  • a partial human hair wig is £207.00
